Gallery Opening Reception: Russ Barragan

Danville-based sculptor Russ Barragan will show a sampling of his work at the library Aug. 4-28.

Barragan has been sculpting for more than 50 years and made his first commissioned piece – a chess set – at age 16. Much of his work has been done in clay, but he has also carved in soapstone, alabaster, marble, granite, limestone and wood. Some of his pieces have been used in magazine ads, in television programs and commercials and movies and in theme parks, and he has a 7-foot tall wood sculpture in Centre College’s Young Hall.

He is one of only a few artists who carves in Kentucky limestone, which he obtains from a local quarry.

Barragan has done some portraits, animals, fish, birds, fantastic creatures, abstract work and various vessel forms. He is inspired by many sources – classical and ancient sculptures, renaissance, Gothic sculpture, art nouveau, art deco, and of course, by nature, rock formations and living things.

We invite you to join us for the opening reception for this gallery exhibition on Aug. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
